Coastal Home Decor

Not every coastal decoration needs to be right off the beach – merely incorporating natural touches (both physical and decorative) that make you feel like you’re at the beach.

But it is essential to remember how to dress these objects not to take over your living room. See these hints on how to create some classic beach house décor without over-doing it.

Weathered Wood

And rustic, weathered wood has become a staple for beach house decor. These are either natural (Driftwood furniture) or man-made (painted and coated to reflect time’s shadow over it).

Aspects of sun and rain affect the surface of wood; a third key aspect is the colonisation of the surfaces by microbes (Duncan 1963; Feist 1982; Zabel and Morrell 1992; Cogulet et al., 2018).

For your woodwork, if you are trying to achieve a genuine distressed finish, then you should first sand each section until it starts to show grain. Then sand with different grades of sandpaper to get more rough and expose a bit of wood grain and small bare patches of wood for character. Your final product should look more authentic this way.

Seeking Stripes and Designs.

The blue and white combination provides a nautical look to make you think of ships at sea. These shades add casual tones to coastal home décor and make for an easy mood to live in.

Nautical stripes are part of any home decor for the beach. Block stripes and ticking or awning patterns, they lend a sense of seaside style to any room in which they are hung.

Incorporating natural textures, such as jute and rattan, in the design of beachy decors helps bring indoors into outdoors for a lowkey but serene life.

Sand and shells from the beach are also a good way to show your beach vibe. Arranging them chic yet effortless in aqua mason jars on your coffee table or mantel will immediately uplift any room.

Seashell-Accoladed Picture Frames

Sea shell collecting is one of the best parts of any holiday, but once home, they can either go overlooked or forgotten. This craft is an easy way to use up those lovely beach stones by affixing them to a picture frame for decoration – perfect for kids of any age!

You will need a wooden picture frame and a large number of white and blue pebbles (dollar/craft stores). It can also require Gorilla/E6000 glue and hot glue; the hot glue quickly fixes shells to the frame, whereas the gorilla/e6000 glue fastens both pebbles and shells to the frame.

An antique diving helmet would be a lovely accessory for a coastal house, though that might not always be affordable. You can make a faux one yourself from netting, which is cheaper and also probably something you already have in your recycling bin!

Beachy Table Decor

If deep blues and greens aren’t to your taste, stick with more muted beach-themed shades. Peach and orange are also great when applying to coastal interiors, as well as neutrals like sandy grey.

Shells bring simple summer beauty to any tablescape, coastal elegance. At your dining table, adorn it with big and small shells as well artificial starfish for a coastal look.

Put some of your favorite beach treasures in aqua mason jars to make a nautical beach table setting this Christmas. Add in some textural details, such as tangles of grass reeds or loosely-coiled placemats, for some cohesiveness. A touch of rattan trim stands out against fine chinaware; it also looks fantastic when combined with natural materials such as seashell wreaths or jute rope wreaths!
